The Thing
Tuesday, 03 May 2011 00:00

It’s been almost 30 years since John Carpenter’s The Thing first terrified moviegoers and while the 2011 version is being touted as a prequel, it’s really kinda just like the original. But of course, that’s a great thing. After all, why tamper with a proven formula? Kate (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) is a paleontologist who joins a Norwegian scientific team who’ve discovered (wait for it…) an alien ship and a creature beneath the ice in Antarctica. Being the inquisitive little boffins that they are, the team transports the frozen creature back to their base but before they know it, the creature has defrosted. And of course, it’s VERY hungry. Fans of the original will no doubt recognise some elements evident in this flick – sabotage on the base, trapped crew members and the confusion over who is and who isn’t an alien. Where this version does differ from Carpenter’s is in its exploration of alien technology and shape-shifting abilities. Goody!
